What is Zika?

Zika is a disease caused by a virus that is primarily spread to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. Zika can cause serious permanent birth defects in babies born to women who were infected with Zika virus during pregnancy. Zika can also spread through sex. People with Zika can pass Zika through sex to their partners even if they do not have symptoms at the time, or if their symptoms have gone away.

Who should worry about catching Zika?

  • Pregnant Women

  • Couples Trying to Become Pregnant

  • Babies younger than 2 months old

What if you're infected by Zika while traveling?

  • Get tested by a doctor and receive treatment.

  • Women who have had symptoms of the virus or tested positive for it should wait at least eight weeks after their symptoms first appeared before trying to get pregnant. (Says the C.D.C)

  • Men who had symptoms should wait six months before having unprotected sex. (Says the C.D.C)

  • Most doctors even recommend eating up to two years before trying to conceive again.
